Your factory Yamaha TW200 battery should last you a great amount of time, but all depending on how well you maintain the battery. The longer you can keep your TDUB’s battery functioning properly, the less frequently you’ll need to replace it. Not to mention the frustration of hoping on and finding you have a dead battery, the diagnosing of the issue, the time it takes to research the type of battery you need, and the expense of frequent replacements. Luckily, there are a few tricks you can use to extend the life of your Yamaha TW200 battery, so you can spend less time worrying about your battery life and more time RIDING!
KEEP IT CHARGED!
The absolute best thing you can do to keep your TW200 battery working stronger for longer is to make sure it stays charged. If you ride your TDUB daily, the alternator should take care of charging the battery while you ride. BUT, it’s important to note that normal riding may not be enough to fully charge the battery after the bike has been sitting for long periods. Just hoping on for a quick blast to the corner store or after the battery has has accidentally been completely depleted may not be enough!
For example, if you accidentally leave your headlight on overnight or keep your GPS unit plugged in and find that the battery has died in the morning, the stator in your bike may not provide enough power to fully replenish the charge after you jump start the engine. In this case, you may need to connect your battery to an external charger/maintainer such as the Battery Tender Junior 12V Charger and Maintainer.
STORAGE MAINTENANCE
If you keep your bike in storage for weeks or months at a time, you’ll need to invest in a motorcycle battery charger. Even if you are not “storing” your bike long-term, such as for the winter, you should still own a “battery tender” specifically for your TDUB! Those two-week stints of “NO TDUBBIN” come unexpectedly or due to other commitments and turns into four weeks of “NO TDUBBIN!” thus it is nice to keep your battery in tip top shape!
IS MY TW200 BATTERY BEYOND REPAIR?
The only way to know the state of your battery for certain is to use a battery tester such as the Innova 3300 Hands-Free Digital Multimeter. This accessory determines the health of your battery in a matter of seconds, so you can find out if a good charging session will do the trick, or if it’s time to purchase a replacement battery for your TW200.
